Santa Cruz

#55to55, day 5

Nadine, Biangela, and me. At the beach—probably Santa Cruz.

This photo sums up the countless beach days we spent with the whole family on Banda Bou. Cousins, aunts, uncles —everyone was there. Often, Tío Chalie’s extended family would join in too: my primu and primanan di kriansa.

We celebrated birthdays, the start and end of school vacations, or just went for a random day. Arriving super early to claim a good shady spot for Mom and the aunties, while us kids spent the entire day in the water. The grownups played dominoes in the shade—always loudly. Slamming the dominoes down on the table, as is typical on Curaçao. No family gathering was complete without it! As we got older, we joined in and played just as loudly as the grownups.

The barbecues always came along, and sometimes we even camped out in military tents brought by Tío Chalie—complete with cots! Those camping trips were always at Santa Cruz.

My younger cousins and even my little brother won’t remember these Santa Cruz days. This was before their time, when we weren’t yet such a big group. By the time they came along the beach days had moved to Playa Jeremi or Playa Lagun. Instead of just a day, we’d stay for a whole weekend, renting a family house by the beach.

Looking at this photo, I can almost feel it again—the Banda Bou breeze, the barbecue smells, the noisy domino games, and the laughter of the whole family.
