#55to55, day 13
After school and before diving into homework, we were allowed an hour of doing absolutely nothing—pure bliss! For me, that meant one thing: Candy Candy. This was he OG anime for basically everyone back then (or so I think). My introduction to the art of coming-of-age stories whether in books, movies, or songs, alongside Little Women. The drama, the heartbreak! I hated the cruel Nick, Eliza, and Tía Abuela. And don’t get me started on Anthony—cue all the tears.
On the island, we watched it dubbed in Spanish, as our TVs picked up Venezuelan signals better than Dutch ones, I mean there was an ocean between us and the Dutch mainland. Back then, I had no idea that Candy Candy was Japanese—she spoke Spanish, so of course, that’s who she was to me! Years later, I discovered the Japanese theme song, but I’ll always sing this version:
🎵 Si me buscas, tu a mi
Me podras encontrar
Yo te espero aqui, si si
Este es mi lugar
Si quieres reir
Descubre la alegría de soñar
Un mundo de aventuras sin igual
Junto a mi, a tu amiga Candy
Si te sientes solo
Recurre a mí
Te estare esperando aqui
Cuentame tu historia
Te alegrara, saber que una amiga tendras
Buscame, sigueme, llamame Candy
Busca mi camino, sigueme
Rie como Candy🎵
